Congratulations Don! Have spent hours and hours of discovering the real spirit of Nancy, you have achieved the main goal, which is Her angels voice. Thanks for You,"Sweet dreams" of many guitar players and fans have come true.
I have Roy`s first autograph. The Boarding House in
San Francisco . Dec 1974. I was with a friend sent by
the Berkeley Barb to review the show.
Roy was really hot that night, the crowd was wild.
My friend gave up his interview after a couple of
questions and I asked Roy if I could interview him.
He said yes.(I am a guitar player also). I asked him
who his favorite guitar picker was."Lonesome Sundown" he said. I asked how often he was asked for an autorgaph,he said never had. I grab`d a napkin and asked if he would give me one. He said sure.I had him write first on it also. I still have it. One of my prize possessions. We had a nice talk about Django and Hendrix my other two favorites beside Roy. I didn`t tell Roy that but I think he knew. He seemed like a wise person and a very nice guy.
When I asked why he didn`t take the offer of the Stones he said, " I`d have to learn all those songs" and smiled.
Thought I would pass the story along.

I know I saw at least 2 Roy Buchanan shows, booth at the Agora or Tomorrow Club, whatever it was called when he played there. He was great. He's the only guy I've ever seen do a string change without stopping. I remember him, falsely perhaps, sharing a smoke with an audience member during the process. I was sad when he died, I read the newspaper story about it, and felt bad. He was great!
I never saw Roy. I learned about him from comments in Guitar Player magazine. Nonetheless, I have since delved into his catalog and am speechless.
His live version of the Joe Walsh tune "Turn to Stone" is as good as anything, ever, anywhere.
God bless Roy.
I saw Roy Buchanan in NYC at The Bottom Line. I think it was 1985 or earlier. I remember him playing Hey Joe, Down By The River (N. Young) and Walking Godzilla through the alley.
He TOTALLY blew me away!
Afterward we went back stage and met him. He as drinking a Michelob beer and smoking a cigar. We asked about the Fender Strat... "That's a complicated instrument" he replied.
You are correct, he was emotive... its really an understatement. His playing was divinely inspired. No doubt he had a direct connection with the big man.
I've been a Roy Buchanan fan since high school in the 70's. Saw him in Boston with Robin Trower. Incredible show all around.
Seen him 7 times, met him twice, took my wife and friends to see him, told them "you will never see anything like this in your life" 2nd song they agreed. videos dont capture the real Roy. I remember him playing Hey Joe , 2 hands and during the fastest part, taking 1 hand off to drink a beer, guitar never changed . dont go to many concerts , but always went to Roy's
Saw Roy 1988 in Cairns Australia just a few months before he died. had been listening to him for a good decade before hand. still the best I ever saw god bless him.
I was just a kid in high school when I first saw Roy Buchanan play at Kent State University and had the honor to see once more a few years later in Youngstown, Ohio. His mild stage presence only magnified his scorching passion. He could say more with a Tele and a Vibrolux than most of his peers with a bay of effects and a stack of Marshalls. God Bless Roy Buchanan.
I WAS THE LEAD SINGER WITH ROY BUCHANAN
AND THEN PLAYED THE HAMMOND ORGAN.
I HAD A GOOD LONG CAREER THAT SPADED OVER 60 YEARS. I WAS A NAME ACT ON THE ROAD AND IN THE DC AREA.
" LITTLE JOE & the IMPOSSIBLES "
I first heard Roy from a flexi record from Guitar Player mag back in 1985. And I first saw Roy when he toured Australia when he had his head shaved. I will never forget what I saw or heard. I have also become friends with a bloke who was the a sound engineer for his Aussie tour. He has shared tracks recorded from the desk of that tour. Awesome stuff to listen to. Roy will always be remembered as long as electric guitars are played, which should be a long time.
Got great photos of Roy. Back in the day his manager would call me and I would take photos and talk to Roy after. I think it was the Roxy in Hollywood. I think some of the photos were published in High Times or Guitar Player. I cannot remember.
hello Robert Kozanek,
as you can understand, those fotos were analog. I have to make a scan and then i will try to send them.
Thank you! bye!
In response to Willem van den Oever.
I deeply believe there is not only me who wishes to see this snapshots mentioned. If they are exhibition consists please show us the link.

When Roy performed in Amsterdam i was allowed to go backstage. Of course i asked him also about the Rolling Stones story. Yes, thats is true, he said. So,i asked, why did you refuse? He laughed at me through his grey beard, spreaded his arms showing his belly and asked me: Hey..do í look like a Rolling Stone? After that I smoked the cigar he offered me and he signed all the L.P.'s that i had brought with me. Some with a message like "Bill, think future". I can show you the pictures but i dont know if they are of any interest. My Spanish wife, who was with me, did not like guitar blues or rock or country music at all but she found this concert overwhelming, hypnotizing and almost scary. She recognized the music because i was always playing the LP's and she always said that it gave her headache but this evening, during the concert, she said she had goosebumps all over, could not stop gasping at Roy and she applaused for him till her hands were aching.
Just about the most complete guitarist I ever saw!
All natural, no effects, a master of his craft.
Soulfully & sadly missed. RIP, Roy
WOW !!! is all you need to say.i saw him about 6 or 7 times, always had to go see him when around town.the first time in 1970,when he was doing "the messiah will come again" he hit notes so intense that my wife dug her nails in my leg,ouch...
Roy was incredible! I regret deeply that I never got to see him perform live. His spirit and body of work will serve as the ultimate motivation for scores of guitarists. All the best to his family!
Regards,
Francescp
First time I heard "Sweet Dreams" so many years ago, I got goose bumps.
I still get goose bumps whenever I hear it!
It was what turned me on to the Telecaster, and Roy the Telemaster!
My brother introduced me to Roy`s music in the 70`s. Since then, I`ve never heard another guitarist use bends, volume swells, and pinch harmonics the way he did. His unfortunate passing was not only a shock but a terrible loss to his family and everyone that enjoyed his music. To my fellow guitarists, learn his songs to keep his legend alive.
Hi Don -
It was great to find this on the TDPRI! I have most of Roy's recordings and had seen him 'live' only a couple of times, but what a performer and tone to the bone. Roy's Second Album, especially the cut 'After Hours' will always be a favorite.
A good friend of mine was able to play Roys gold top Les Paul at a gig. It's the one seen in the photos here. It had not been played at a gig since Roys death and still had the same strings he put on it. That particular guitar is now up for sale. Gave one a very strange feeling knowing that the last man to play that axe on stage was THE legend Roy Buchanan. area.
I am from Whyalla in South Australia and have been a Roy Buchanan fan for a very long time one of the greatest injustices in guitar playing to ever happen was Roys name not appearing on the top 50 of all time greatest guitar players in my view he should be on the top of the list.Live on in guitar heaven Roy Buchanan.
ROY IS A BIG INFLUENCE ON ME
My best friend in high school gave me Roy's first official LP in '72 with "Sweet Dreams" and "Messiah" on it -- said he thought I ought to hear it. He was right. More than any guitarist, Buchanan has influenced my sound and my playing of the guitar. He put so much of his soul into his playing, and this has become my main lifelong pursuit. R.I.P. Roy Buchanan. We miss you dearly.
I was fortunate to see Roy 17 times - first with the Snakestretchers, warming up John McGlaughlin, big venues to roadhouses. Took a lot of pix - some pretty good. I have an unused ticket for the roadhouse he was to play Aug. 17, 1988. He was a true master - regardless of the 'demons' he dealt with. He once said on stage......'I might look calm on the outside, but I screaming on the inside.'
Roy must have performed Green Onions a hundred different ways, but I never get tired of listening to any of the versions, they were all classics. My personal favourite was the studio version from Loading Zone. Thanks for putting this site up.
RIP Roy.
Roy you will always live on with the music you brought to us all. Saw you in the late 70's and to this day was the best musical performance I have ever witnessed. ROY BUCHANAN YOU WERE THE BEST!
On this night, 22 years ago, Roy Buchanan died. August 14th, 1988. By reading the guest book of this web site proves that memories of his emotional guitar playing lives on.
KL
Great talent. His cover of Tyrone Davis Can I Change My Mind is spectacular
I discovered Roy in my teens and fell in love with his music... I am now 54. Got into a conversation about 3 weeks ago with some guys (mid 20's) that did not know who Roy was even though they were into older music; well they know now!! So, I came home and dug out my old vinyl....even with all the crackles and pops, those albums brought me back to a place in my head that only Roy's music could take me and made the hairs on my arms stand up. My 16 year old son was blown away by this unbelievable artist when I shared these albums with him. The older I get, the deeper the music touches my soul................
Thanks for the Roy tribute, very enjoyable. I grew up in DC and was a huge fan of Roy. Saw him many times live and once got a haircut from him. I think you should ad Nils Lofgren to the people associated with Roy. He was my fave guitar player of all time and I still miss him.
I saw a video on u-tube of a pile of Roy's gear that was up for auction. Dont remember if Nancy was in it or not.
saw him live at liberty lunch austin tx 1982 kick ass show and still relish the memory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Roy Buchanan was one of my favorite players and people back in the day... & remains so to this day... & will probably always remain so! I remember seeing Ike & Tina Turner (Review) on the Joe Mannix show, the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Cream & Credence on ABC prime time and listening to Roy when I was growing up, learning to play the drums.
He was one of the best! God bless ya Roy!
Roy could make the Tele sing. Truly the Master of the Telecaster.
I am the proud owner of a 57 tele once owned by Roy. It sounds and plays great.
I commented before, I was blessed to see Roy 37 times before his passing.I would travel 10 hours in a blinding snow storm, just to be in the room while he tore it up.Many of the shows were at the Roslyn NY club called "my fathers place",or any one of the clubs in NYC, DC area.To this day i turn people on to him, his sacred art.Everyone I teach of him is drop jawed....I can hear his influences in many famous axe players...David Gilmour for example.Purpose of this post is to IMPLORE all of you reading this to TEACH your children.........teach them, enlighten them to this kind of quality, play livestock for them...Tell them to sit down, shut up, hold on....then play Johnny winter, Alvin Lee,Elvin Bishop....Joe Bonomassa.....Help the youngbloods know they do NOT have to eat the "RAP" crap being fed to them, so record companies can profit on the destruction of our childrens taste for quality....Don't let Roy's sad death be in "vain"......get your kids, neighborhood kids....ANY kids....play them the good stuff. You may not know you had impact for 5-10 years...but you'll help, you'll see......PEACE/good job to the maker of this site!!!!!
i watched Roy play less than 2 weks prior to his death at the Stanhope House in New Jersey. I had the privlege of talking about music and life with Roy after the show, and I am haunted to this day by his memory, a gentle giant of Rock and Roll, the Master of the Telecaster...
Santa Claus was a Blackman 123
Merry Christmas Don
Thanks for the sounds
To say I have been inspired by Roy Buchanan would be a major understatement. Roy's music affects all of my playing. No one, and I mean no one, has ever played with more raw emotion and power than Roy. To see him lplay live was the absolute best!
My youtube site dedicated to ROY..
Enjoy... let me know when you come up for air...
http://www.youtube.com/user/SnakeSSSStretcher#p/p
Well the hole in the 53's headstock, no not to hang on the wall, jez, Roy had experimented with a "b bender"setup to get a bend effect on the b string. He didn't like it and removed it, but allas the hole remained. I knew Roy for 30 yrs. A goof friend who is saddly missed
Hey Las, How you doin'? You got all my Jeff Healey tapes.
Roy Buchanan Lives !! Played a 1987 concert last night it is was smokin hot!
Hi there

First saw Roy at the Crossroads in Bladensburg,Md. in 1969 on the recommendation of Nils Lofgren,my classmate in gym class. Then met Danny Gatton and fell under the spell of the Tele.God rest them both.
Great site.Roy was one of a kind.Nobody before or since bare theyre soul like Roy did.I got the austin dvd.Any other footage of Roy out there? Thanks.Good luck with the site.
Saw Roy back in the late 70's in a bar in a Minneapolis suburb and became a life long fan. What a show and what a guitar player. Downloaded the podcast Indie Feed and just got done listening to Why Don't You Want Me. Great stuff. We miss him.
Thanks Don For creating these sites. Thanks for all informations about great Roy which we can study, watch and listen.
I hope all of you Roy B fans have great holidays...my work as an appraiser is slow...but something will come up. Just keep coming back here with Roy stories..I turned some old friends onto the American Ax disc...they flipped.
I saw Roy in Tokyo with Delbert mcClinton on bass and vocals in ,I think, 1986.First time for Roy, as an australian, first time I'd heard of Delbert. Now have lots of Both
good to see this website...saw Mr. Roy at Ferrells Elbow Room Jacksonville, FL. Will never forget ... have many pictures, I have one of Nancy alone on stage before the show.
I have been listening to and enjoying Roy Buchanan's music since the mid-70s. What soul, tone, and technique. He needn't have worried about others stealing his licks. No one, living, dead, or to come, could match his expression of the music he played.
heard a song on I tunes radio paridise. had a few albums of yours in high scholl. what great memories... hope all is well with you.
ps. that was 35 yearas ago...
mike
Gooood to see someone put up a site in memory of ROY BUCHANAN. Thanks
Hi don I was form new jersey. In the early sixties I meet Roy buchanan. He was in a band called the temps. playing at Dick lee in south jersey on rt 130. I was only 16.at the time. I did not hear that sound on a guitar.untill Iheard danny gatton. years latter. I am glad that some one like came alng. thanks don

Roy was a teriffic musician,I saw him in Seattle and have the same Live CD of the Backstage performance, Great !
DON- your downloads take forever-but thanx for keeping RB's legacy alive so that old fans and especially NEW fans can enjoy Roy's music!
Cool sight. Discovered Roy in my teens (you know, when guitars/music ruled your life). Growing up in northern Michigan, I thought I was the only person who even knew who RB was??? He was my well kept secret...still amazes me how all that talent seemed to go unnoticed by most of the music world...but not by me. I am personally responsible for turning a whole legion of fans onto Roy...I did my part. Sure miss you Roy...we all do!!!
Hello all. It's a privilage to be able to just say thanks for the emotion and skill that Roy gave to the world as a guitar player. He was on a show called The Old Grey Whistle test over here in the UK in the early 1970's. His playing, the emotion he wrapped up in his sounds are what all players wish they could emulate. God bless Roy
Roy was the greatest. I'd like to know if anyone has a copy of "The Greatest Unknonw Guitarist In The World" on DVD or VHS.
I first discovered Roy in the mid 70's and loved his stuff. I KNEW he was THE master blues guitarist after Duane Allman had inspired me to pick up the guitar & I found out what true discipline it takes to get your feelings across using wood, wires, electricity and fingers! ROY WAS & IS the MASTER in my book. Jimi & uh...Eric whatsisname would probably attest to that, and Billy G. knows his ability and his harmonics are no match for Roy's!
Cool Site, Roy is best ever!
If anyone knows where to find the guitar tabs for Roy's song: 'Peter Gunn Theme' in his album 'Dancing on the Edge'. I've been looking all over the internet and still can't find them...
If you happen to find out pleas e-mail me on:
bombniboy3@live.com.au
Roy Buchanan is an awesome, talented guitarist. I have all of his songs. I mean every single one! If anyone would like to me to send them to you just e-mail me: bombniboy3@live.com.au
The songs are free!
Just fishing around, always like to read what folks who knew how great RB is...isnt it weird when you speak of him, and people say Who? I mena if you love guitar stuff, you have to know and love Roy B.!!! Miss him a lot, but listen to him often.
I am proud to call roy my friend.I miss him very much.God Bless Leroy buchanan and may he rest in peace.I can see the lord telling him to please turn that amp down. And roy just smiling.
stumbled acoss this site. What a treat. Roy's works and style were ground breaking. Love his work!
I was fortunate to see Mr. Buchanan back in the late 70s at the Great Souther Music hall in Orlando FL . A friend of mine had front row seats and gave them to me. At the time I was young and did not know his music. I just wanted to go to a show. I remember walking out and thinking WOW! I got to know his music real fast! He was GREAT!
Roy showed me what i had to do with my life! RIP Roy
Roy's virtuosity is unmatched by anyone on the planet. I saw Jimmy Thackery last week and played an amazing tribute of Messiah, probably as good as anyone alive.
Kurt O. What do you know about a 1988 Live Cocert(Virginia)? I downloaded a bundle of 12 albums as mp3's. It was among them, but low in quality. Among the tracks was a totally different rendition of When the Guitar Plays the Blues. Does anyone know anything about this album?
Was THE greatest EVER... FAR above
ALL others... incl. Stevie Ray,
Eddie Vanhalen, Clapton, Hendrix,
Jimmey Page, etc.!!!
WEG
Roy, you are always in my heart. You are the best of the best.
Rest In Peace, my dear friend.
So very sad he checked out early . Got to see him 5 or 6 times ,last time was 4 months before he died. body will ever match his ability .Miss him .
is it really true he turned down playing with the plastic ono band? lots of balls to turn down john lennon!
when I,practice, and play I always hear the love of god that Roy ,and Jimi put in their playing
saw roy twice in the 80s in australia it was and still is the best show of guitar talent i have ever seen simply awesome he has always been my faverite axeman rip roy you changed my life forever
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Buchanan at a free concert in Ct. at the Guilford fairgrounds in the 80s a couple of weeks before his untimely death. He seemed like a regular guy. He welcomed me to sit in the back of his white caddy limo and drink some jim beam with him.I had never heard of him at the time. He asked me what i wanted him to play and i requested red house by Jimi.He signed my guestbook to my new buddy Dave.He was probably one of the nicest gentlemen i have ever met. When he played the song he said this ones for dave,I was a really young man and he made me feel pretty special. Roy Buchanan was a real gentleman,
saw Roy twice at the El Mocambo in Toronto, first time was Oct,79 and second time was Jan 81 my buddy still has Roys autograph from the second time. Roy was power drinking pretty well as I remember ... fun night
Came from Ozark, Ar. Where I grew up, sadly most people in Ozark doesn't even know who he is. That's a tragedy all to itself.
I only saw Roy once, during the '80s in Canada, and stood transfixed 5 feet from him as he wove his magic. It is one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. A long time guitar player myself, that experience was truly inspiring. God bless, Roy. They broke the mold when they made you!
I really miss roy he was the one that made me throw my guitar away why bother its already been done. now I just play stereo and bask in his lament. does any one know if he palyed at the nags head with rory. I think some one is pulling it on me be couse there is a legend of them playing together and some has it on tape . could this possibly be true. Can yu picture roy in his chair on two legs leaning against the stack and rory sweating blood and bushmills out front. if you have heard this too that would legitimise the rumour/legend/myth....thanx
the album called guitar on fire was originally called "loading zone" on atlantic. thats stanley clarke playing on raymons blues and heat of the battle i bet my copy is rare?
Dave
i saw roy at my fathers place in roslyn long island in the late 70s
i still have analbum of his called Loading Zone it has heat of the battle and turn to stone on it he was awesome! also saw rory gallagher 4 or 5 times at MFP another dead guy that was amazing. Dave
What LP was"sneeking godzila in the ally" on & is it avalable
Roys sister, Linda, prob wont remember me..we went to school in Pixley, Calif and was friends. I remember Roy coming to our house to play his guitar..my Uncle Henry was there then..he played guitar by ear..couldnt read..he got jealous of Roy lolz :D Just a very old memory..its so cool to find this site!!!! Tried for decades to find something about Roy but always looked for LeRoy Buchanan! :) Thanks For This Site!
I had the privlege of seeing Roy at My Mother's Place in Washington DC before the building of METRO made it close down. He was great. Fortunately we have recordings to listen to. As for him ending his life in Fairfax Jail... Everyone in Fairfax knows that the cops there are the worst anywhere. Back in the day, they beat the crap out of everyone. Go to jail drunk and you were guaranteed a broken nose or worse. Bless you Roy. I'll burn one with you when we meet again.
Hey Don- Merry Christmas!!
Shoot me an email sometime.
All the best,
JMc
Heard RB for the first time on the car radio when washing my father in law's car. Being a Tele player i recognised the sound immediatley, got in the car, turned up the volume and got blown away. i went out and got the RB album the next day. Saw RB in Birmingham Town Hall the next year
when he toured UK - it was early 70's - 2 days after I sold my 1963 Tele to get something with a 'bigger sound'. He sure made me regret that decision! Great that there's a site dedicated to this amazing player.
Wyn
I'm a 23 year old guitar player and thanks to my dad, Roy became a huge part of my life and influence. Glad there's a site to remember him.

hi,
I have a signed photograph of
Roy Buchanan that I wish to upload to the site.what e mail address should I send it
to?
I got the photo through his manager Shelley Yakus.
As a vocalist and musician I am inspired by the raw emotion Roy is able to evoke.
In my book Roy was as good as they come, so sad that one with such talent had to leave us so soon.

Great site! Just a comment about the hole in Nancy's headstock, from what I understand Roy did that in an attempt to fabricate his own "B" bender type device... could be false but makes more sense than a hanging hole...
i find it quite strange that some people say Roy who..I know we have heard the best unknown guitarist phrase but hey I guess they are just not listening..site still going..cool
I made a personal recording in 1988 in Club Soda in Montreal; it was the second-to-last performance of Roys life, and has never been released in public. It was very LOUD (which is good because people don't talk so much around the consensor microphones) and I stood near the front and the monitor speakers and got a good mix. His band was excellent, the recording with just a touch of distortion, and Roy's playing... this recording is an importsnt document in his discography.
Anyway I wanna get it out there! (I'm going to one way or another, since I ripped it off the cd the 8-track burned). How do I upload the mp3 sitting on my desktop (it's 24 mb)? Here are the songs:
Peter Gunn
Down By the River (listen for Roy bellowing during the chorus!)
"Bitch Blue" (?)
When A Guitar Plays the Blues (violin-like intro; chilling, piecing high notes)
Drownin' On Dry Land (nice neck-position slow blues, then:
Purple Haze (lightning fast)
The tape was found in my Mom's crawlspace stuffed in a burlap bag! I had long since (and quite sadly) assumed the original two tapes has been lost in the sands of time; but one tape remained, mixed with a bunch of other stuff from when I was a student at McGill. Also got some Johhny Winter and Jeff Healy in there. Pogues, too.
I just got a digital 8-track and ran a line from the headphone output of my tape deck onto channels 1 & 2 and - voila! What a useful device (Tascam DP-02). Originally recorded on Sony Professional Walkman (very, very happy with the result!). Nice tight bass.
Sadly, I appear to have lost or hopefully just misplaced the encore tape, which has a version of Wayfaring Pilgrim that I memorized long ago, absolutely seared into my memory. Roy's also my biggest influence playingwise, these days.
If you'd like a copy of the recording, email me.
